My Part 1 Placement at RRA Architects

By Lucy Pietroni

Working at RRA Architects, on placement as a Part 1, was one of the most educational and enjoyable experiences I have had while studying architecture.

During this time, I enjoyed watching myself progress as an individual and designer. Compared to university, the work I began to produce was at a much higher standard and quality. This was due to the help and support I received from all the people working at RRA, but most especially my line manager, who went above and beyond to make sure I was constantly learning.

The team was overwhelmingly friendly and welcoming, including the key members, Margot and Bear (the dogs), although they took a little more warming up than my colleagues.

I had the opportunity to work on projects that ranged from residential extensions and internal modifications to conceptual design work for a powerboat museum. I was able to assist on surveys and enjoyed the opportunities to visit active building sites. And, there were opportunities for me to listen and learn during various CPDs with the accompaniment of a free lunch.

My confidence also grew with my time at RRA due to the responsibilities placed on me as Part 1. These included meeting the clients, answering the phones, locking up the office, and slowly learning everyone’s tea and coffee preferences. At the start this was terrifying although eventually became second nature. However, what made my experience so memorable and what makes RRA so special was the social side of the office and effort made to keep morale high. This included activities such as a weekly pub quiz, memorable Christmas drinks, and the refilled biscuit tin.

The enjoyment I experienced while on placement has forced me to reconsider my interpretation of a ‘real architect’ and has left me excited for the long journey ahead to get my Architects qualifications.
