RRA was recently invited to explore one of Gloucester’s hidden historic treasures, the Eastgate Chamber, as part of a Constructing Excellence Gloucestershire tour hosted by the Museum of Gloucester.
RRA’s Group Operations Director, Jane Cooke, and Project Designer, Rhys Bennett, were given an opportunity to view the subterranean remains of Roman and medieval Gloucester, including the stone foundations of the East Gate, ancient street surfaces and layered city walls.

The Eastgate Chamber is an underground archaeological site showcasing structures spanning from the 1st to the 18th centuries. As Jane and Rhys descended into the chamber, expertly guided by Amy from Gloucester Civic Trust, they witnessed the remarkable evolution of the city through centuries of engineering and expansion. With Roman walls, a 13th-century tower, and even Tudor and Georgian additions, the visit was a compelling reminder of the importance of careful design, adaptation and conservation in our built environment.

RRA is proud to have delivered numerous conservation and heritage projects, including the restoration of the Grade II* listed Ross-on-Wye Market House and the regal Pittville Gates in Cheltenham. Events like this reinforce the relevance of our work and the value of safeguarding architectural heritage for future generations.
You can book your own tour via the Museum of Gloucester to uncover the remarkable history beneath your feet.
